What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

Anything doing damage right now or leaving the house without water, a toilet or a safe supply. If water is running, gas is suspected or the sewer is rising indoors, do not wait for business hours.

  • A burst pipe or a split flexi hose pouring water into a ceiling, wall or subfloor
  • Sewage rising in the shower base, the toilet bowl or the outside gully
  • Storm water lapping at the slab or bubbling out of the yard pits
  • No hot water at all, with a household needing showers
  • A suspected gas leak, which starts with getting people outside, not with us

A dripping tap, one slow basin or a renovation question can go in as a normal booking instead of a 2am call.

What Should You Do Before We Arrive?

A split pipe under a village cottage and a failed hose in an estate laundry cause the same trouble in the first few minutes. Here is what to do while we are on the way.

Shut the meter

Look near the front boundary for a small lid set in the lawn or path. Turn the valve inside it clockwise until the meter stops moving.

Empty the pipes

Run the laundry tub or an outside garden tap so the water still in the line drains out there instead of through the break.

Keep power clear

If water has reached the wiring or a switchboard, stay out of the wet area and mention it when you ring.

Move what you can

Lift rugs, shift furniture and put buckets under drips to limit the damage.

How an After-Hours Call Runs

The process is the same at 3pm and 3am for every Heddon Greta Plumbing Co booking, and the price conversation happens before the tool bag opens.

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3475 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Contain, trace, then repair

We shut off what is still running, follow the fault with the locator or camera where it is hidden, and make the repair on the spot where the pipe allows.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Changes the Price of an Emergency Job?

You agree to the figure before we start, even when the call comes in the small hours.

  • The time you ring A job at night or on a Sunday is priced at a different rate from a weekday booking, and you hear it first.
  • Where the break is A leak hidden behind tiles or beneath the slab edge takes more opening up than a hose that let go behind the washing machine.
  • The size of the fix A new hose is a small job; cutting out and replacing a length of corroded pipe is a bigger one, and the quote says which you have.

Heddon Greta's Night-Time Faults

Estate hoses wearing out together

Heddon Greta's newer streets were fitted out in a short burst of building with identical braided hoses, and those hoses are now failing on a similar timetable. A laundry or ensuite flooding late at night is the result, and the fix is to isolate the water and fit a quality replacement.

Storm water on reactive clay

On the level lots of the Avery's Green side, above the Hunter Expressway, heavy rain has nowhere quick to go, and the young stormwater pits fill faster than they drain. If your yard gullies are spilling, the stormwater drains page covers the clearing work that follows.

Old pipe in the village

Worn services under the first weatherboard cottages along Main Road can fail suddenly, and the repair needs care because old galvanised pipe does not join to new fittings the way a modern line does.

"I commend them for their very fast and efficient service when we had a burst pipe." Joan

Where the Follow-Up Work Sits

Once the urgent part is under control, the rest of the job may belong to one of the other service pages.

When We're Not the Right Call

A gas smell goes first to the distributor's emergency crew, who own the meter and the pipe back to the street. Water welling up from the road or footpath means the Hunter Water main has failed, and their fault line is the number to ring.

If water has reached wiring, an electrician makes that safe before anyone works near it.

Questions We Get at Odd Hours

Do you come out to Heddon Greta in the middle of the night?

Yes. We are Available 24/7, Sundays and holidays too. Work after dark is charged at a separate rate, and we give you that figure on the phone so you can decide whether it waits until the morning or gets fixed now.

What should I do about a burst pipe before the plumber arrives?

Turn the water off at the meter by the front boundary, then open the laundry tub or a garden tap so the pipes drain. Keep clear of anything electrical that is wet and describe what you can see and hear when you call.

Is a gas smell something you handle?

Get everyone out of the house, leave switches and appliances alone, and ring the gas distributor's fault line once you are outside. Once their crew has made it safe, our gas fitter can find and fix any leak in the pipework past the meter.

What if the burst is past my property boundary?

Water running up through the footpath or the nature strip points to the street main, and Hunter Water owns and repairs that pipe. If that is what it sounds like on the phone, report it to them straight away and keep your own stop valve shut if the leak is inside your boundary.
